Slide 15 Fuels for Transport

• Due to the special suitability of oil-based fuels, these are retained for air and marine transport.

• Phase out oil-based fuels for road and rail transport, save for 10 % in blends.

• For new road transport fuels, use Not Hydrogen but Ethanol.

• Ethanol may be made from biomass, synthesised in a carbon-neutral manner, and imported.

• Blends with up to 22 % Ethanol can be used in standard petrol engines.

• Blends with 85 % Ethanol (E85) can be used in modified or Flexible Fuel (petrol engined) Vehicles.

 
• The vehicle range on 85 % Ethanol is about 72 % of that on petrol.

• 100 % Bio-Diesel can be used in near-standard diesel engines.

 
• Blends with 95 % Ethanol can be used in modified diesel engines.
